Setting SMART Goals

Sometimes we pick goals that are doomed to fail from the start, and then we blame ourselves rather than the process that we used to work toward the goal. The SMART goal model is a way of making sure you don’t set yourself up to fail.

  • Specific: Write down a simple, clear and well-defined goal.
  • Measurable: How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal? Can it be checked off a list, or will the result be something that you can identify?
  • Achievable: Is your goal realistic? Having confidence that you can achieve a goal increases that chance that you will.
  • Rewarded: Goals are always easier to achieve when we have something that we can look forward to as a reward.
  • Timed: Give yourself a realistic timeframe for completing your goal.
