Finding Supportive People

Finding people who respect and value you is important to your health. Whether you call this a support system, support network, community, or prefer another word, it is important to be connected to people, resources, and organizations that care about you and your health. Everyone has times when they need help, and GLBTT* people are no different. And while you don’t always need to wait for a crisis to get help, sometimes it’s the worst moments that make us aware that some of our needs are not being met. Here are some general guidelines to consider when finding people who might become a part of your support system:

  • Do they refrain from making inappropriate or hostile comments about GLBTT* people?
  • Do they challenge heterosexist, homophobic, and transphobic behaviours and actions?
  • Have they responded positively to general references about gender and sexual diversity?
  • Have they been recommended by other GLBTT* people?
  • Have they had experience working with or supporting other GLBTT* people with your unique qualities and interests?
  • Do they inform themselves if they are ignorant about some GLBTT* issues?
  • Do they give you options, resources, and connect you with other supportive people and organizations?

If they are in a position of authority where something (food, shelter, grades, employment, etc.) might be taken away from you, are you in a position to respond to that? (see When It’s Not Safe To Come Out)

Where Are Your Supports?

You might want to make a list, chart, picture, or some other visual reminder of all the people and resources that make up your support system. This will give you a good sense of whether you’ve got all your health needs covered, and a resource to refer to when you need help. Have you considered your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health? Do you have regular supports and emergency supports? While one supportive person is a great place to start, it can be draining for both you and that person if they are your only support.

You will find many resources throughout this website that can help you connect with GLBTT* and people and their allies.
